Positive response when ChromoGenics pitched to dragons in Silicon Valley during Uppsala Innovation Day
Uppsala Innovation Day is an event organized by Relation and UIC (Uppsala Innovation Center) where innovative business ideas are highlighted. The focus during Uppsala Innovation Day is the companies in Uppsala that contribute to a more sustainable society. In five minutes, ChromoGenic’s business concept was presented via video link to an expert panel at Intel’s head office in Santa Clara to get feedback on how well their idea is suitable for the world market.
Do you want to save the climate, increase the well-being of people and make some money in the process? asked Micael Hamberg, the COO of ChromoGencis, as he began the pitch.
Micael talked about the impossible equation in which modern architecture uses more and more glass in buildings, which promotes people’s well-being while having devastating consequences for the climate. Glass as a material is beautiful and durable in buildings, but insulates poorly against heat and cold, leading to increased energy consumption and energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. At the same time as glass, for the person in the room, contributes to improved indoor comfort through free access to daylight and views.
Our dynamic glasses are the solution to this equation as they provide sustainable sun protection for increased indoor comfort and energy efficiency in buildings. The electrochromic foil we have developed has revolutionized the dynamic glass market. By using a multi-layer structure between two plastic films, we create, by a unique roll to roll process, a flexible and light foil whose technology stops the solar heat before it even enters the building. With a low electrical voltage our dynamic solution adapt the solar transmittance through the window, depending on conditions such as time of day, outdoor temperature and window position.
The effect is that the glass shuts the solar heat out when it is warm and let the solar heat in when it is cold in order to regulate indoor comfort and reduce the need for cooling and heating. Since the foil uses electricity only when the tone changes, it is very energy efficient. We also offer fully self-sufficient dynamic glass, powered by integrated solar cells.
The response was positive and the expert panel was very interested in how ChromoGenic’s dynamic product works, can increase the value of real estate and lead to environmental certifications. Much of the discussion concerned our future plan regarding distribution of electrochromic foil to the rest of the world and how this would work in practice.
ChromoGenic’s total façade concept represents the best the market has to offer within performance glass. The three product lines provide increased indoor comfort, improved energy efficiency and architectural freedom.
